State Of The Union Address
Politics aside, seriously, politics aside has there ever been an emptier State of the Union address? I was expecting a lot of empty we oughtas but there was barely even that. No joke, am I remembering past speeches incorrectly? I can't believe how empty this was.

It was so empty that when he walked into the chamber, you got the distinct impression that somebody just left. Actually, I refuse to watch any of his speeches, and I didn't breack the chain last night.
I liked it-a lot.
[lol] So which was it Anon 7:05, did you keep your unbroken chain of anti-observation intact or watch him walk into the chamber under the impression he was leaving?
Just political speech Roger, empty of substantive content overall but with some grist for constituents as they usually are; e.g., try parsing the responses to Obama's speech while stripping out hyperbole, bs and dog whistles for something tangible that might realistically happen outside some partisan's febrile imagination.
From my POV though, Obama is showing some signs of beaten dog syndrome: Not simply flinching before the blow but too busy dodging blows that have yet to come.
Doesn't look like much is going to change for the next couple years; guess I'll just have to go and make some more money. [shrug]
politics aside, agreed. Very flat until near the end when he finally found some energy. Strange SOTU address.
Seemed to me that he missed a bigger opportunity capitalize on a momentum shift that the markets had experienced the last quarter. Additionally, he seems to lead with details on ideas without giving a "big picture" vantage point first.
I changed the channel after the GOP retort and said out loud, "nothing ever changes."
Obama's problem is that he now has a record. He is trying to run away from it, but I just do not believe the electorate is stupid enough to believe his words when we have 2 years of actions to compare them to. He is a leftist politician to the core who is trying his best to get re-elected so he can defend his "accomplishments" of the last 2 years.
The best part of the SOTU speech was not having to watch Nancy Pelosi jump up and down every 30 seconds behind the podium and clap like a meth head on overload.
Enjoy the new civility. The Code Pink people weren't invited to disrupt this SOTU.
And yeah, RuPaul from Kentucky was equally engaging.

A speech written by committee...so it said nothing. A few bones to everyone but no leadership on anything. I think what he wants he knows he can not get now and he played it "safe" by being vague which ends up sounding like a tenth grader reading a speech written by his mother.
This speech was the opening salvo of the 2012 reelection campaign. Obama will do/say whatever it takes to get reelected. He will even appear to be a demo-Republican if that's what it takes. Once he gets reelected we will get two years of an extreme left wing push to change the basic fabric of this country since Obama will no longer have to worry about the voters and their interests.
...only an opinion, of course...
Not that it is likely to have longer term impact, 84% of the people who watched the speech approved.
For the first time in over 30 years, I followed the advice of Alito and Scalia, passed on watching the event and played rummy with my 101 year old mother.
She didn't want to watch B'Roke, either.
PS - she whipped my a**
man. The market kinda makes me want to ratchet interest rates up a bit.
Not wanting to sound too snarky but all the posts are as void of content as they said the speech was. Is it appropiate to comment on something one ignores?? Unfortunatly Bachmann said something concrete, but her facts were all wrong. Too bad we want to only listen to something we agree with. Is this a good model for investing.
Dear 7:51p.m.
I submit your comment lacked a quality only known to us insiders:
A sense of humor.
This sense will take you much farther in life than having a marble stuck up your a**.

I graciously concede to your far superior, eloquently expressed post.
I take my hat off to you, bloody good job my boy. A little overboard on the “inside humor” thing don’t you think!
I’ll happily fade away for the night, not to ruffle any more feathers or waste internet bandwidth.

Empty speach for an empty country fill with empty people.
Only other country I've visited as desperatly empty as the U.S.A was the U.S.S.R.
Congress is bought and sold by the financial speculators, keep buying those ETFs funding the casino.
The rest of congress is bought and sold by the defense industry.
So lets cut health care, social insurance, and medicade, ... LOL!
Anon 7:52. I did not need to watch the speach. I simply watching Glenn Beck and reguritate what he tells the right wing wacko talking points of the week are.
Hint: They have to do with a chain saw, bunny rabbit, the rings of a tree, and nazi liberal elitists but that is probably way over your head.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has sent his defense minister Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi to Washington with an urgent request for US backing for his embattled regime against the street protest movement which gained in violence on its second day
Egypt is fighting for its freedom from yet another US backed criminal dictator.
Why does the USA fight against democracy in Egypt? The Suez Cannal.
Friend at 11:23 PM
Beck = Regurgitate -- Check
Beck = Right wing wacko -- Check
N__i liberal elitists = Statements not to be tolerated by anyone.
Too many have forgotten to exercise the responsibility that goes with freedom.
It might be interesting to read the conservative views of Eisenhower, Nixon, and Reagan.
Things that go over reader’s heads are often the result of the inability of a writer to clearly express what is wanted to say.

PS Roger, I apologize for trying to bring out a lot more concrete.
Your political biases are showing. Republican's sole purpose seems to be an obstructionism.
It is just yesterday that Republicans said "Deficits did not matter". They had no problem waging wars on borrowed money. Where were the fiscal hawks among you at that time? You guys only care about these things after ruining the finances of the state, revert from surplus budgets to deficits, and when deficit wides due to declining economy blame it on Obama. Too bad you got away from this last election because of short term memory of American public.
Shame on you!
to anon12:38 AM
I am left of center and the "party of no" has been in control too long. I happen to agree with you 100%. My reference to "conservative views of Eisenhower, Nixon, and Reagan" was to show that in at least their social programs, they were so far to the left of center that the Republicans would reject them today.
So other than your first and last paragraph I applaud your post!!!
Good thing this particular topic was on politics.
