This is the Halawa Valley which is at the end of the road on the east side of Molokai. We spent a little bit of time at the beach here on Monday. As we were getting ready to leave Joellyn was taking pictures of an old building and as I waited for her a dog came up to me looking a little sheepish but generally friendly.
I noticed the dog looked too thin and had an ugly looking injury to her left shoulder. She also had a weird collar on her neck that was made out of fire hose material and ran the length of her neck.
We were out in the middle of nowhere, there were a few properties out there and even a church but we did not see anyone out there and we did not know what we were going to do. Leaving the dog there would have made us heart-sick but we had no idea if there was animal control here and for all we knew maybe she was someone's pet.
Fortunately someone who lived out there came back. She said the dog was probably a lost hunting dog (the fire hose collar was to prevent a boar from goring her in the neck) and that there was an animal control office in town--26 miles away, half of which was very narrow with lots of windy, blind curves.
We drove the dog into town, we waived down a police officer who took the dog for us.
There was no great outcome here but the dog, as a hunting dog, is worth money to someone and so her owner might be looking for her.
It would have been easy to leave the dog there but it would violated our sense of what is right. I can think of several ways to apply this to investing and chances are you can too.

Nice work Roger. Well done.
Phil
Roger, it sounds like you've got your head screwed on right!
I LOVE seeing all that green scenery.
Enjoy your vacation and thanks for the wonderful photos.
Do you happen to know any p natural gas etfs. if noit do you know which energy etfs have exposure to natural gas
If you are looking at natural gas, holding Chesapeake (CHK), EnCana (ECA) and Teppco (TPP) or Kinder Morgan (KMP) might be a better trio than an ETF index, with a nice yield built in. I have been following natural gas plays for awhile and thought these might be worthwhile for you to look at. Cheniere is a speculative play on liquid natural gas (ticker symbol LNG).
Roger, great pic. My son had his first extended date with his future wife visiting Halawa Park while he was stationed in Peal Harbor as a USCG officer. They still talk about Halawa Park in glowing terms.
Good job Roger.
I see that there was a happy ending here, the dog was turned over to someone who could help her. Well done.
Nicely done, Roger. You've been to Hawaii enough to realize how important pig hunting can be in this culture. In a place like east Molokai, that dog was very important to somebody and probably part of the family. I haven't been to Halawa Valley in years. Gotta get out of Honolulu more.
Wow, it's nice to see Halawa so green. Usually when I go in the summer it's dry. Can't say much about the dog. Animals there, they have a harder life. I've seen them suffer too.
