Nice job Roger - thanks for putting yourself out there like this. I think you should keep doing the weekly video blogs.
Roger,
Brush your hair!
Love You,
quite certain my Mom did not post a comment.
Just a note, if you doubt the 40% off house prices, here's a builder - D.R. Horton - doing 25-30% off already.
D.R. Horton Ad
And we haven't even gone into recession yet. Well, probably not.
Yes, it's not perfect yet (hard to get rid of that mental pause, umm, in talking), but offers something different.
Anyone trying something new and uncomfortable should be applauded.
Perhaps a different backdrop (looks pretty Jed Clampett style), and focussing the camera on a broom 18" ahead of the wall might work to help too.
Anyway, best wishes for continued success ...

One way to start answering the "what is equal weight" question is to look at some of the capital market indices, which attempt to measure all the investable asset classes in the world -- "the market" in the broadest sense. The MSCI version looks like this:
http://www.mscibarra.com/products/indices/gcm/
Total Equity 57.5%
-North America 28.5%
-Europe 16.7%
-Asia & Pacific 8.2%
-Emerging Market 4.1%
Total Fixed Income 42.5%
-Sovereign 22.1%
--US 4.7%
--Europe 8.6%
--Japan 6.0%
--Other 2.8%
-Investment Grade Credit 18.7%
--US 7.3%
--US Mortgage Backed 6.1%
--Europe 4.5%
--Other 0.8%
--High Yield 1.7%
Roger,
Thanks again for the detailed response. I think I have a much better understanding of your investment approach now, but it also raises more questions.
1. Have you ever given any thought to collectables as investment vehicles - fine art, coins, antiques, other? Obviously they would be a very small part of any
portfolio, not to mention the difficulty in finding a liquid investment vehicle. But, who knows, with the proliferation of new asset vehicles, that might be ending soon. I've always been intrigued by the fine art market - maybe because I have a degree in fine art.
2. One concern I have is that the global equity markets seem to be more and more correlated (in terms of absolute direction, not volatility). Because equities are the largest proportion of most investment portfolios, does this worry you?
Roger,
No offense, but the terrorists make better videos than your stuff. If you are serious about continuing with the video format, I suggest you get a professional studio, a new wardrobe, a make-up artist, and some acting lessons.
Seriously, this video is a distraction from your cental message.....stick to writing a blog, its far more powerful. The video makes you look like a rank amateur.
8:16pm,
Why would anyone take offense to that?
Tom K,
Worry, not really. I agree about higher correlation but I don't think it is anywhere near 1.00. There may be a time where we all need to learn more or do more or both in terms of repositioning a portfolio.
Thank you for the info on equal weighting.
Roger,
Ignore the negative comments regarding backgrounds, hair, focus of camera etc.
The weekly video is a great service and very enjoyable. Just plunk the camera down wherever you're comfortable and talk to us. It's interesting and informative and THAT'S what's important.
Roger,
Good job and kudos to you for taking the time to do this!
A few suggestions (hopefully constuctive):
1. a couple of bullets on what you discuss in the wrap up would help.
2. 10 Minutes or less is good since longer than that people (me) might not pay attention.
3. podcasts would be good too,if convenient for you, since there is no visual content and it can be synced to a mp3 player... If not, listeners can easily listen and not watch if they want...
All in all, keep up the good work!

Only a dope would take issue with your video. A dope named anonymouse, of course.

Who's to say that the original prices represented comparables at the time? It's like a store who brings in good for a sale, puts them out at 25% above retail and marks them down 35% a month later.
Keewp the video rap up going. In contrast to some others I enjoy the homey feeling of the post. i am tired of slick production especialy when the subject talking knows nothing. In this vein have at least one dog bark if possible . It's fun to hear advise from a real person with a dog rather than a slick talking head in a $2000 suit. Kudos!!!!
Jesus Roger, this video makes you look like a hostage victim.
Roger--Some people have nothing better to do than carp. I prefer content over flash anytime, and you provide that. You'll get more comfortable with this medium. A hundred years ago it seems, I had to sit through a video made of my team presentation in Policy class. I had pulled an all-nighter. We got an A+ on the presentation, but I looked (and gestured) as if I had come off the set of "Night of the Living Dead". So, that is my context, and you far outshine that image! Thank you for taking time to do this. I'm glad to have stumbled upon your blog. It adds a very nice perspective to the mosaic of information that I take in.

This guy is as sharp as a bowling ball. But, he proves that God has a sense of humor.
Laryy you don't do Rog any favors by stroking his ego. I enjoy reading Roger's work, but this is absurd.
lets call this for what it is. An experiment that makes first grade work look sophisticated.
Little John really? Yet here you be. Explain that............
Loved the dog! You'll get smoother with more posts - keep it up
MFB
no control over the dog, hehe. Larry vs. Little John; good stuff.
Thanks for the positive and constructive comments.
The comments about appearance seem a tad off point. I'm a guy who gets to work from home sharing what I think and have learned. I have nothing to sell you. You come to this site because for some reason you have interest in my commentary. There are some "ums" in the video and I am working on that but reasonably speaking its not like I am trying to do the video with a studder.
Regardless of anyone's (including my partners') opinion about why I have this blog is it is fun and I enjoy helping people become more knowledgeable investors, that's it.
Okay, let me be more specfic.
Roger, when you write your blog, the reader is focusing purely on the content. Unless you make horrible spelling or grammatical mistakes, the delivery mode takes a back seat to the content.
When you are experimenting with the video, and doing it as a rank amateur, the delivery mode takes on a whole new level of importance, and because it is done so poorly, it detracts from the content. The viewer is looking at the background, the dog, the hair, the stuttering...whatever. Unless done well, the vidio is a huge distraction.
Not trying to make it personal Roger, but when you write, vs. when you do the "hostage videos" there is a distinct difference in your ability to communicate your message.
So, either vastly improve the video, or drop it. Its not helping your image or improving the delivery of your content.
And Larry, get a new set of pom-poms....your cheerleading is getting boring.
Little John: STAY DOWN, KID!
Dear Tiny John: Meet me at the pre-arranged place. Remember to bring cash. Small bills. Make sure that you aren’t followed and come alone and unarmed. No cops either. If you do exactly as you are told, I will release your brain to you unharmed. Remember, if you ever want to see your brain alive again, no tricks. Got it?
Your pal, Larry
you both care about this aspect of my hobby more than I do. Enough, there is some great football on right now. The Bengals just went ahead of the Steelers and there is a good game happening in Minnesota too.
Larry, Larry.....
You are embarrassing your brother....with all of the emotional posts that you've had to delete.
Please try to keep your posts on topic, and stay away from the personal attacks....they only serve to make you look unbalanced. Roger doesn't deserve this.
Time to watch the Pats.
This is the first video I've seen you do and it is GREAT. Please continue with them and forget about the little whining weasels taking pot shots. Dan Fleischer
You did much better. Although the first efforts rhythmic rocking motion did give you the demeanor of a wise and knowing monk.
I guess the more stationary address was a necessary trade off: less spirituality for less distraction.
I like the Kramer the Dog interludes. Please make that a regular feature. I have taken an even number of barks to mean that the market is headed up and an odd number of barks that it is going down. We should track his results!
Anyway, I enjoyed the video and appreciate your efforts. I hope you take the negative comments (and kidding) that people have made here as a sign that they care and just go ahead and do what you want.
Just a personal opinion - I think the video is great. Lot more information in a much easier format to multi-task. Great job.
